Sing With Us
So you think you might be interested in singing with us? Great! Read on so you know what to expect as you join the premiere male a capella organization in Central Pennsylvania.
What's the first thing to do?
When you first come to a rehearsal, one of the music leadership will take you aside to determine your voice part. Don"t worry - it"s not a difficult process. You will sing something along the lines of Happy Birthday. We are simply attempting to determine where your voice part fits into the barbershop style. Once your placement is done, you will be assigned a "buddy" who is to sit with you and get you comfortable with the chorus operations. He is supposed to help you step through the process. He"s your main source of information on what to expect - anything you can think to ask, please do! The more you know coming in, the more you'll enjoy your KCC experience
Do I have to read music?
Being able to read music is not a requirement. Most of our members cannot read music, but our chapter has strong leadership who is willing to step up and help you with whatever you need. There are plenty who can, so there's always someone who can help out. We also run early bird rehearsals on a periodic basis to work on newer music, or as a refresher for those pieces we're dusting off after a break.
OK, I'm hooked - now what?
Once you've been to a couple rehearsals(we recommend three), you're welcome to start the process of joining. You will let your section leader know you're interested in joining up. What he'll then do is work with you to determine what song you'd like to audition with. It can be something as simple as a polecat, or it can be whatever the chorus has been working on while you've been there. You will then take the song you're interested in auditioning with, and when you feel you're ready, you can schedule your audition. Again, this isn't a strenuous process. What you'll do is sing your part in a quartet with the section leaders from the other parts, with one of the directors present. This audition is to ensure you're comfortable with your part and can stand on your own.
